This year’s event is the official lead into the Australia Day celebration and part of Australia Swims – a 9 day celebration of Australia’s love for swimming and the water – brought to you by Optus.

Join us for an open water swimming experience you’ll never forget.

On Saturday 20th January 2018, we’ll take to the water for Optus Swim Sydney Harbour. And we’d love you to be part of it!

Spend a Saturday morning to remember jumping into the water by one of Australia’s most iconic landmarks. We’ve jam-packed the day with fun and entertainment, with heaps of action in and out of the water.

Swim Course

Please view the course map below which will also be on display at the event. A briefing will be conducted by the race starter prior to each wave start.


On arrival please proceed to the Registration in the Royal Botanic Gardens next to the Sydney Opera House to collect your timing chip and race pack. If you have not already entered online please ensure you arrive before 7.00am to enter and register on the day. All participants must register prior to 8.15am to be eligible to compete.

Competitors will receive their timing chip and the first 500 will receive a souvenir swim cap at registration.

Getting There

The closest public car park to the event is the Sydney Opera House car park at 2 Macquarie Street, please visit for further information.

Circular Quay is a five to seven minute walk from the Sydney Opera House/Royal Botanic Gardens. You can catch buses, trains and ferries to Circular Quay. State Transit buses and ferries and City Rail trains will be operating on an enhanced public holiday timetable.

For those arriving on bike some bike parking spaces are available to the public underneath the Sydney Opera House Monumental Steps. Bring your own lock.

General Info

  • Some shade and sunscreen will be available at the event however it is recommended that you wear sunscreen and bring a hat.
  • Hydration is provided to competitors as they exit swim finish area (sports drink & water)
  • Food vendors will be operating and selling drinks and snacks

When and where is the swim on?

The Optus Swim Sydney Harbour is held on Saturday 20 January 2018 at Farm Cove Sydney Harbour. The event marketplace is in the Royal Botanic Gardens next to the forecourt of the Sydney Opera House.

What time does the race start?

Race start times are as follows:

  • 6.30am Registrations and Marketplace open
  • 8.00am Same Day Registrations closes
  • 8.15am Pre-Registration to close
  • 8.30am Junior Kids 300m Swim starts
  • 8.45am 750m Swim starts
  • 8.53am 2km Swim waves start

Can I get a refund on my registration?

There are no refunds or transfers for this event.

What is the age group for the 300m Swim?

The Junior Kids Swim is open to kids up to 13 years of age

Can I swim with my kid in the 300m Swim?

Yes, parents or guardians can swim with their kid in the 300m Swim – please advise the race organisers on the day if you wish to do this.

What time is the presentation?

The presentations will take place at 11am on Saturday 20 January – once all swimmers have completed the course.

First, Second and Third Male and Females for the 300m, 750m and 2km and Anything Goes swims will be presented on stage along with random draw prizes.

All results will be posted online and available on the information boards at the event following the conclusion of the swim.

Do I receive a race pack?

Everyone who pre-registers for the Optus Swim Sydney Harbour will receive a race pack. Same day registrations will receive a race pack while stocks last.

What happens if the race is cancelled?

The Optus Swim Sydney Harbour organizers reserve the right to cancel the race due to rough or dangerous conditions. In the event of cancellation, there will be NO REFUND of entry fee and the event will NOT be re-run. A decision will be made ASAP on race day and advised via this website.

Can I wear a wetsuit or use swimming aides?

If you wish to wear a wetsuit or use swimming aides you must enter the ANYTHING GOES category in either the 2km or 750m swim. Flippers, pool buoys and wetsuits are all permissible, water craft of any description are not allowed to be used.

What if I want to swim with my mates or family and we are not in the same age category?

If you wish to swim with mates or family who are not in the same age category as you, you must enter the ANYTHING GOES category in either the 2km or 750m swim.

What do I do if I get in trouble in the water?

Raise your hand. The event is supported by the South Maroubra Surf Lifesaving Club and qualified surf lifesavers will be on the water throughout the event on both Inflatable Rescue Boats, water craft and rescue boards. Water safety officers are positioned at each turning buoy while additional surf lifesavers will patrol along the course. Water safety is in radio communication and access to first aide and medical officers in attendance.

Where can I put my belongings?

A baggage storage area will be available at the event. Belongings must be in a bag and volunteers will label the bag with your race number. We request you do not place valuables in your bag. SAL/SME360 take no responsibility for items placed in this area. Best efforts will be made to keep them secure.
